Job Title: Capacity Development Officer
Organisation: Initiative for Equality and Non Discrimination (INEND)

About INEND:
The Initiative for Equality and Non Discrimination (INEND) is a local not-for-profit organisation that researches and undertakes strategic actions towards equality, acceptance and inclusion in the Coast Region of Kenya. The Initiative for Equality and Non Discrimination (INEND) was established in 2015 in response to the need for new, expanded and diversified organising, on issues affecting sexual and gender minorities. INEND strategically and systematically engages with various actors within the society, particularly those who are known perpetrators of violence and discrimination, as a means of reducing violations against sexual and gender minorities.
Position Overview
The purpose of the position is to lead all Capacity Development activities for INEND. The holder will develop context specific support for each of the targeted recipients based on assessments of the specific capacities and
needs in line with INEND’s strategic objectives. The holder will also oversee capacity development initiatives for the various networks and stakeholders that work closely with INEND. This position reports directly to and works closely with the Executive Director. The holder of this position must demonstrate INEND’s values of non-discrimination. respect, commitment, accountability and integrity.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
General
- At all times, act according to the policies and regulations of INEND; respect and abide by values, vision, and mission of the organization.
- Keep updated with issues related to equality, acceptance and inclusion in the Coast Region and the country at
large and regularly make a review of how such issues impact INEND’s work
Technical
- Collect, design, produce and update appropriate resource materials (modules, curricula, manuals and courses)
related to equality, acceptance and inclusion as needed for capacity development of staff, partners and
stakeholders, including training, mentoring and other methodologies.
- Provide training and mentoring to staff, partners, stakeholders, and other actors, for specific areas/topics
identified as needed for capacity development
- With the Executive Director’s approval, liaise with Finance on logistical arrangements of trainings, workshops,
and seminars as needed.
- Be responsible for facilitation (as needed) and note taking for workshops, meetings and other capacity
development sessions.
- Prepare training reports, along with annexes, after completing any trainings in the field.
- Follow up on all capacity development activities conducted to determine the effectiveness of trainings
conducted.
Capacity Assessments
- Conduct institutional and target group needs assessments and prepare specific capacity development
programmes for them.
Stakeholder Support
- Support capacity development-related activities for stakeholders and partners in diverse areas of organizational
development (e.g., program management, resource mobilization, and monitoring and evaluation) and technical
capacity development e.g., advocacy.
- Actively contribute towards acceptance of INEND’s work as a whole by local authorities, stakeholders,
partners and the community
- Initiate, organize, and make conceptual contributions to all activities related to capacity development in terms
of strategic direction, work plans, consultancies, recruitment, program reports and budgeting
- Develop and maintain good coperation and support with national and county authorities; and other
stakeholders to promote INEND’s agenda of inclusiveness
- Establish and strengthen networks with other capacity development resources and organisations working on
issues of equality, acceptance and inclusion in the Coast Region.
- Coordinate with national and international NGOs, CSOs and other civil society organisations and associations
working in the field of, or supporting issues relating to, equality, acceptance and inclusion at national and regional level for cooperation in conducting trainings, sharing capacity development resource materials as well as sharing of lessons learned.
Work Plans, Performance Monitoring and Reporting
- Contribute to the development of annual work plans, performance monitoring systems and tools, and writing
of program reports.
- Compile quarterly, and annual reports on capacity development initiatives undertaken, ensuring statistics are
correct and reports and outcomes of each initiative are clearly articulated.
- Write success stories/ human interest stories regarding capacity development initiatives on equality,
acceptance and inclusion
Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning/Knowledge Management
- Perform consistent program monitoring, evaluation, learning related to capacity development.
- Implement, maintain and manage knowledge and information sharing systems within and outside INEND;
maintain and enhance the sources and methods for capturing knowledge
- Maintain physical and electronic records of all capacity development resources and update them on regular
basis.
Organizational Learning
As part of INEND’s commitment to organizational learning and in support of the understanding that learning organizations are more effective, efficient and relevant to the communities they serve, encourage all team
members to commit 5% of their time to learning activities that benefit INEND as well as themselves.

- An improved quality in Sexual and Gender Minorities’ programming and access of services.
Job skill specifications:
- Proven facilitation and collaboration skills working with multi-level stakeholders, including technical and
subject matter experts, government agencies, local partners, researchers and others. Strong planning and inter-
cultural communications skills
- Proficiency in developing appropriate resource materials for specific target groups
- Report writing
- Ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks
- Strong community-based, community development and mobilizing.
- Good interpersonal and team-working skills.
- A willingness to promote the work of INEND and develop collaborative work with others.
- A commitment to working in a non-partisan manner.
- Proficiency in Ms-Office
Qualifications and Experience:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in international relations, political science or other relevant social sciences;
- At least 3 years relevant professional experience in research, knowledge management, organizational learning and other related fields.
- A Master’s Degree in a relevant field would be an added advantage.
- Strong research background and experience working with both researchers and policy makers and program managers in the civil society sector.
- Strong written and verbal English and Kiswahili communication skills.
- Be a team player and promote team spirit within the INEND team.
